Free park-and-ride service to ease traffic issues at 2016 Wanaka A&P Show
Visitors to this year’s Wanaka A&P Show are being offered a free park-and-ride shuttle service to the lakeside Showgrounds.
The initiative is a trial this year, to be held on the second day of the Show, on March 12. It is aimed at helping ease traffic and parking congestion in central Wanaka as more than 35,000 people converge on the Wanaka Showgrounds and the adjacent Pembroke Park for the two-day event.
Drivers are able to park their cars on signposted private land on Enterprise Street, off Ballantyne Road. Two buses will run every 15 minutes to the Wanaka Showgrounds between 8.30am-5.30pm.
Show organiser Jane Stalker says the move is in response to feedback from visitors about finding it hard to get a car park at the event, which emerged from an independent economic impact report on the 2015 Show.
“We’ve taken on board that feedback and think we’ve come up with a good solution for our visitors. We hope people will support the free shuttle service so it can become a permanent feature of the Show,” she says.
The move has also been endorsed by the Wanaka Police, she says.
“We know how busy Wanaka gets at Show weekend with people coming from all over New Zealand to experience our event, so it’s good to be able to help ease the pressure on parking.”
“The Wanaka Show is a major event for the Queenstown Lakes, and it’s an A&P event of national significance, so it’s really important for us to listen to the feedback and keep improving the Show each year,” Stalker adds.
One change for younger participants is the location and time of the popular Dogs and Pets competition. A hit with local children who bring a variety of quirky and cute pets, the Dogs and Pets competition will now take place at Mt Iron Ring, beside the Z Zone at 10am on March 12. The Z Zone, a fun play area for kids featuring bouncy castles and other rides, is on Pembroke Park.
