Volunteers Are The Heart Of Our Heartland Show: Gary’s Take On Giving Back

Behind every great event are the volunteers who make it happen. This month we profile local Gary Pasco, and hear his take on why lending a hand is such a rewarding way to be part of the action.

For the past three years, Gary has been a vital part of the volunteer team behind the scenes at the Wānaka A&P Show. As a member of the trades team, Gary plays a hands-on role in getting the showgrounds ready and helping things run smoothly once the gates open.

“I work with Paul to help mark out the grounds before the Show, the wobbly lines are usually mine!” he jokes. “Once the exhibitors arrive, I help get them to the right sites and sort out any issues, whether it’s a tent that doesn’t fit or a last-minute change.”

During the event, Gary is a friendly and reliable presence across the grounds, checking in with exhibitors, solving problems, and generally being where he’s needed most. “I try to be available and visible, sometimes just being there makes a big difference.”

While he says he doesn’t have one favourite attraction, Gary admits to enjoying the farriers display this year, and always gets a kick out of the much-loved Jack Russell race.

But for Gary, the real highlight is the people. “I really enjoy working with Paul, Maria and the rest of the Show team, they’re dedicated, skilled, and just great people. I also love meeting the trade vendors and chatting with the public. If I can do something small to make someone’s day easier, I’m happy.”

As for funny moments? “There are plenty! They’re part of what makes volunteering so enjoyable and memorable.”

So, would he recommend volunteering at the Show? Absolutely.

“I’ve never regretted signing up. If you want to be part of a hardworking, welcoming team and make a real difference to one of Wānaka’s biggest events, I’d say give it a go. It’s just a short time commitment – but incredibly rewarding.”

A huge thank you to Gary – and to every volunteer who pours their time, energy, and heart into making the Wānaka A&P Show the special event it is. If Gary’s story has inspired you, why not join the team? Volunteering is a chance to meet great people, learn new skills, and play a part in one of our community’s biggest celebrations.
