Livestock Competitions

Showcasing the region’s finest in livestock excellence

Livestock competitions have long been a cornerstone of the Wānaka A&P Show, showcasing excellence in breeding, handling, and presentation. With entries across cattle, sheep, boer goats, equestrian, dog trials and fleece, it’s where experience, pride, and rural tradition take centre stage.

2025 Wānaka A&P - Rural Village - Boer Goats 6

Boer Goats

Convenor: John Binney

Welcome to the spirited tradition of Boer Goat competitions which has woven itself into the very fabric of our agricultural celebrations since the beginning. From the early days, these robust goats have trotted onto our stage, becoming an integral part of the showcase.

Our judges evaluate the Boer Goats, assessing the impeccable breed standards of does and bucks across various ages, seeking excellence through areas such as size, hardiness, and docility. It is a celebration of beauty and resilience that defines this remarkable breed. As we proudly host these competitions, we honour the Boer Goat, the largest goat breed globally, known by its scientific name, Capra hircus.

2025 Wānaka A&P - Cattle-25

Cattle

Convenor: Darryl King

With a history as rich as the land around us, our cattle competitions were introduced around the 45-year mark of our Show, but their roots are traced back to the mid-1800s, when cattle exhibitors were part of bazaars and fairs.

Today, our 15 classes showcase the finest breeds, each judged on their potential for correct breeding standards. Judges observe the animals on their individual traits compared to that of the others, looking for varying markers such as their conformation and muscle development.

The Junior Handler classes are the gateway for the next generation of cattle breeders to craft their knowledge and skill base.

2023-03-10 Wanaka A&P Show - Dog Trials-1

Dog Trials

Convenor: Duncan McRae

Step into the rich tapestry of New Zealand farming history at the Wānaka A&P Show’s Dog Trials, a tradition dating back to 1867, right here in Wānaka. As an integral part of our cultural heritage, these trials pay homage to the enduring alliance between farmers and their canine companions. The legacy continues through handlers and their dogs as they vie for the coveted Willis Scaife Memorial Trophy.

Judged not just on speed but also style, competitors navigate sheep around a challenging obstacle course. It’s a mesmerizing dance of strategy and skill, where every move is a testament to the historical synergy between human and dog.

Equestrian

Convenor: Virginia Wells

Welcome to the heart-pounding world of equestrian excellence at the Wānaka A&P Show, where our equestrian competitions have been a cherished tradition since the show’s inception. As proud custodians of this longstanding event, we celebrate the timeless bond between horse and rider that has captivated audiences for generations.

Our competitions showcase the skill, grace, and camaraderie of riders who have dedicated themselves to the art of horsemanship. From classing and hunter jumping to the speed and precision of show jumping, our schedule caters for the seasoned equestrian enthusiast or first-time rider.

2025 Wānaka A&P - Wool Shed-4

Fleece

Convenor: Ian Bagley

Welcome to the heart of fleece excellence at the Wānaka A&P Show. Since our humble beginnings, fleece competitions have been the fibre-rich backbone of our agricultural showcase—celebrating careful breeding and craftsmanship. In 2023, we became home to the New Zealand Fine Wool Supreme Fleece Competition, judged on micron, clean fleece weight, length, and strength. Our approach blends industry-standard testing with traditional expert appraisal.

Here, fleece isn’t just a commodity—it’s a reflection of the region’s agricultural prowness. And for those curious minds: micron measures fibre fineness, and clean fleece weight? That’s the wool’s true weight, minus the dirt and grease.

2025 Wānaka A&P - Merino Judging-17

Sheep

Convenor: Boyd Ottrey

Discover the essence of the Wānaka A&P Show’s enduring Sheep competitions, a mainstay since the beginning. In this display of our region’s breeding industry, these competitions spotlight elite sheep, rigorously judged for various standards—a genuine reflection of agricultural excellence.

Beyond the business, an intriguing tidbit: these contestants sport rectangle pupils, adding a touch of unique charm.

Join us in celebrating the true spirit of Wānaka’s agri-world, where history and respect converge in the folds of sheep competition.
