National Merino Competition

For generations, Merino sheep have been at the heart of New Zealand’s fine wool story — and the National Merino Competition honours that legacy. Previously held in Christchurch, the competition found a new home at the Wānaka A&P Show in 2025, bringing the country’s leading breeders and their finest stock together on a national stage.

Judged on wool quality, fleece weight, structure, conformation, and breed character, each entry represents years of careful breeding and dedication. The competition rewards not only the excellence of the animals, but the skill and commitment of the breeders behind them — celebrating the tradition, innovation, and future of New Zealand’s Merino industry.

Jack Russell Race

A firm crowd favourite since 1998, the Jack Russell Race brings action, unpredictability, and plenty of laughs to the Main Ring. Dozens of Jack Russells line up at the start, racing — or sometimes chasing each other — toward the finish line in front of thousands of spectators.

It’s a simple event that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it’s one many look forward to each year. With dogs and owners travelling from across the region, the race adds a light-hearted moment to the Show and has become a much-loved part of the weekend.

NZ Fine Wool Supreme Fleece Competition

A showcase of excellence in fine wool production, the NZ Fine Wool Supreme Fleece Competition celebrates the skill, innovation, and dedication of New Zealand’s leading growers. Held at the Wānaka A&P Show, it highlights the craftsmanship and world-class quality that define our wool industry. Each fleece is assessed to the highest trade standards, combining technical testing with expert appraisal.

Growers present their finest work on a national stage, connecting with leading wool brands and global markets. The competition stands as a proud reflection of the tradition, quality, and bright future of New Zealand’s fine wool sector, and remains one of the true highlights of the Wānaka A&P Show.
